In 2002, the people of Volkswagen introduced a concept that a titanic challenge posed by the Consumer: One hundred miles with only one liter of diesel. Born seven years after the L1, the "second generation" behind this idea. Everything seemed that the L1 would be the one to reach the public, but the appearance of the Qatar Motor XL1 Show this year things changed. Now, the very CEO Martin Winterkorn Volkswagen Group has confirmed that the XL1 will be chosen to enter into limited production phase and reach consumers in 2013.
One hundred miles per gallon. Twenty years ago any manufacturer would have thrown on the floor laughing at such a goal, but we are in a different century, and with different needs. There are those who say that we are only changing oil for lithium, and the extraction process is just as harmful or worse. But the auto industry has begun to embrace electricity as an alternative to driving their vehicles, although the rate itself has relied on each company. People in 2002 Volkswagen introduced its "concept of a liter." The first version was entirely diesel. The second version came in 2009 and joined a 14-kilowatt electric motor. Both were "promised" by the year 2013, but in the 2011 edition of the Qatar Motor Show, came the third generation of the concept, the XL1. According to CEO Martin Winterkorn Volkswagen Group, this is the version that hits the market.
The look of the XL1 is certainly attractive, but its most notable factor is undoubtedly its efficiency, which makes sense considering its roots. Being a diesel hybrid, the XL1 can reach 0.9 liters per hundred kilometers in combined cycle, and although both engines may seem small in numbers (a two-cylinder TDI diesel engine displacing 800 cubic centimeters, and a 19 kW electric with 35 km range) the truth is that it can accelerate from 0 to 100 in 11.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 159 kilometers per hour, something powered by a drag coefficient of 0.186 (surpassing even the old General Motors EV1 ) and a weight below 800 kg.
Winterkorn's announcement on the XL1 was part of a group of statements made by the CEO, mentioning also the growth of both Skoda and SEAT in its restructuring process, and also confirmed that Volkswagen will not make motorcycles for the moment. Studying more closely the development and production plans of Volkswagen XL1 could say that would not be such a convenient option as opposed to, for example, the electric version of the Volkswagen up! which is scheduled for that year, although rumors indicate that the first series of XL1 would be about one hundred units. Combine this with the price (not yet revealed, but is expected to be high), we are talking about two completely different sales volumes. Put another way, who really is interested in an XL1, I go to look no matter what Volkswagen has alternatives in the market.
